Imported food needs to undergo compulsory E-coli testing. This is an important decision taken in the meeting of the scientific panel on Contaminants or Biological Hazards of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.
While discussing the Biological Hazards in food, the  scientific panel on Contaminants or Biological Hazards of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, recommended for compulsory E-coli testing for imported fresh fruits and vegetables. This is one among the various scientific panels constituted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Each panel meets regularly and discusses the current issues related to food safety. The panel also opined that there is an urgent need to review the microbiological standards for fruits, vegetables and spices, owing to the recent out-breaks of food-borne illnesses in the country.
Dr.Bhupendra Singh, Senior Scientist, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, and Dr Malabika Roy, Deputy Director-general , Division of reproductive health and nutrition, Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi   have been assigned the task of preparing draft documents on microbiological standards of fruits& vegetable pdoducts and spices.

Microbiological parameters for fresh fruits and vegetables are not given under FSS Regulations, 2011 at present. All the members of the scientific panel were of the opinion that e-coli testing should be made mandatory for imported fresh fruits and vegetables. The methodology for analysis for e-coli testing will be sought from the Indian Institute of Horticulture Research.
This is undoubtedly, another one step ahead.

Everyone really needs to have a proper knowledge, and understanding of how to prepare food and how to handle it effectively and safely. We could actually all get our own food hygiene training if we want to, so that we can be assure of the safety precautions and standards on cooking, preparing and serving food.
